The dot SE country-specific domain was launched in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration procedure was quite restrictive, so a very low number of domains were obtained. Persons were permitted to purchase only one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was compulsory, i.e. merely Swedish individuals, companies and organizations could buy a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized significantly and, as a consequence, the number of dot SE domains has been mounting each year.
